When deciding whether to having a website or not you should consider the following,
Hosting
This means that you pay a company to have your website on their server, so it can be accessed 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.
For family websites some ISP’s (internet service provider) I.E. the company you pay for your broadband connection, let you a have free amount of web space for you to have your website hosted, normally this does not cover business use, due to bandwidth.
The Cost
The cost of designing a website depends on the size and complexity of the site and also the cost of hosting.
For example, lets say you have a small site costing about £350 plus the cost of hosting £114 for the first year and then £90 each year after that, now compare the total cost for 1 year £464 against advertising in a local paper in full colour covering 6 whole pages. Remembering the cost you pay is only going to be in 1 issue unless you pay for your advert to be in every issue.
Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against advertising in the local paper, in fact I do advertise myself as it lets my customers new and old, know about my new website and any special offers I might have.
By having a website doesn’t mean that once the site has been designed and hosted you stuck with the content of your site, as I can update your site when needed. Naturally it would in occur a charge, the cost is not going cost the same as the original charge of designing the site, (unless you completely change the style and most of the contents)
